Native loading of JPEG files in the photogrammetric window

January 19, 2016 jpeg photogrammetric window

Digi3D.NET has always been able to load JPEG files in the drawing window, never in the photogrammetric window. The reasons for not adding this possibility were as follows:

  • The classic photogrammetry cameras (the airplane ones, not the drone ones) save the images in TIFF format natively, none save JPEG files.
  • The decompression speed of the JPEG format is not very fast.
  • JPEG is not meant for huge images (more than 10000x10000 pixels, which is the usual in photogrammetric images), for this type of images there are other formats that Digi3D.NET supports in the photogrammetric window, such as ECW, MrSID, etc. that are very fast and have a much better compression ratio and with less loss than JPEG.
  • JPEG does not support pyramid levels beyond 16, and with such large images, that pyramid level is very short, you would not be able to see the entire image when doing an extended zoom.

But like it or not we are in the drone age and everything has changed.

  • Now you fly with "toy" cameras that natively store .JPG files.
  • The images are no longer so big and we can see them complete in the pyramid level 16.

So we decided to add upload of JPEG files in the photogrammetric window, so that now the photogrammetric window supports the following image formats:

Format Extensions
TIFF *.tif,*.smti,*.pyr
Earth Resource Mapping *.ecw
MrSID *.sid
JPEG 2000 \*.jp2
NIF *.ntf
JPEG *.jpg

You can see it in action in the video below:
